Welcome to my blog! My name is Philip, and I am a college senior on leave for a year to study Korean language in Seoul on the Richard U. Light Fellowship. I have migrated my posts on my time in Seoul during the summer of 2007 from my previous blog and, inspired by my friend Saskia’s beautiful WordPress blog, I am starting up anew as I begin my year in Seoul. To save space, I am inserting photos as thumbnail galleries. Just click on the the photos to see larger versions. Please report broken links. About the title of this blog: seoulander is a play on the word solander, an archival box with a book shape used for storing prints, maps, drawings, etc., and named for the Swedish botanist who invented it. The image header is a portion of the 18th century color manuscript map Doseongdo (도성도), depicting the center of Seoul. “Jungsim eun jungsim (중심은 중심),” means “the center is the center,” and is true.
